Getting a Broken Zotero Tab Out of Word

A checkbox that wouldn't check¶

Mat, who runs this site, had a Zotero tab sitting in Microsoft Word on his Mac that he no longer wanted there. Zotero is reference-management software - it adds itself to Word so you can insert citations without leaving your document. The normal way to remove it is one checkbox: open Word's Preferences, find Zotero under Add-ins, untick it. Simple, reversible, done in ten seconds.

Except unticking it threw an error instead: "This document template does not exist."

Why the checkbox failed¶

Word wasn't refusing to remove the add-in. It was trying to verify the file behind the checkbox before touching it, and that file wasn't where Word expected. The add-in shows up in a list called Global Templates and Add-ins, and each entry there is really just a pointer to a file on disk - in this case Zotero.dotm. Something had already moved or deleted that file, so the pointer was pointing at nothing. Word choked on the verification step before it ever got to the actual unticking.

The obvious next move was to select that broken entry and remove it from the list outright, using the minus button next to it. That button was greyed out too - Word wouldn't let us remove a reference it couldn't first confirm existed. A dead end caused by the same missing file, one step further in.

Going around Word instead of through it¶

Since Word couldn't act on the file, the fix was to deal with the file directly. Zotero's Word add-in lives in a fixed spot on macOS:

~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content.localized/Startup.localized/Word/

Word loads anything sitting in that Startup folder automatically, every time it opens - that's the actual mechanism creating the tab, regardless of what the checkbox in Preferences says. We navigated there in Finder and deleted Zotero.dotm directly. Word had nothing left to load, and the tab - along with the broken reference and the error - was gone on the next restart.

If you hit the same error¶

Skip the checkbox once you've seen this error once. Go straight to the Startup folder above, and remove Zotero.dotm from there. If you might want the integration back later, rename it instead of deleting it (Zotero.dotm.bak works) - Word only loads files it recognises by name and extension, so a renamed file is invisible to it but still on disk if you change your mind. Reinstalling or updating Zotero will put a fresh copy back regardless.
